Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organization that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace. Greenpeace Southeast Asia needs people to join as Senior GIS specialist to develop and produce the mapping elements of our campaign materials in conjunction with our GIS specialist, the GPSEA forest team and the international campaign team.
Purpose of the job :

This position is until the end of 2010 to bring in additional capacity and expertise to our mapping department. The person will oversee the work of our current GIS specialist, will develop and produce the mapping elements of our campaign materials in conjunction with our GIS specialist, the GPSEA forest team and the international campaign team. This includes our research coordinator, our Forests for Climate team and when necessary our mapping departments in the Amazon and Russia.

Job Title : Senior GIS specialist

Reports to : Campaign Director

Main responsibilities

1. Issue Development Develop and increase GPSEA GIS capacity Go beyond the day to day needs of the campaign and produce a development plan for the GIS department including potential collaboration with other stakeholders (Universities/other NGOs etc). Identify other mapping projects/initiatives in Indonesia that have direct relevance for our campaign and provide this information in a timely manner
2. Networking Build a good network of GIS specialists, NGOs and other stakeholders in the mapping sector who are involved with projects related to our work on emissions reductions. Communicate these projects to the team and proactively identify areas for potential collaboration.
3. GPI and Campaign Liaison Timely, accurate and informed contact with our GPSEA forest team, the International research coordinator, and whenever necessary mapping departments in the Amazon and Russia and our Forests for Climate team.
4. Research Ensure through own, as well as the GIS specialists work, that research information is turned into spatial products including maps and satellite images with accuracy and necessary analysis in a timely manner.

Skills required / qualifications:

• Required: Advanced academic qualification in GIS, or equivalent experience
• Minimum of five years proven expertise and knowledge in mapping
• Good communication skills, including strong writing skills
• Fluent in written and spoken English
• Experience of cross-cultural working environment.
• Demonstrable commitment to environmental/peace issues
• Experience in line management
